Mourning The Dead

Mourning the Dead

After the fire, 146 deaths were left to be mourned over. Because the morgues were two small, the 26th pier was used to display the bodies to be identified. Not even rain stopped the mourners from coming to the pier. Below are images from Cornell University that show the emotional aftermath of the fire.

Forty-three victims were identified on Sunday and all but seven six days later. The amount of deaths alone inspired others to push for better fire precautions. Until September 11th 2001, the Triangle Shirtwaist Company fire had the most deaths in a work place.

Many years later, a complete list of the 146 victims was made, including the seven that were previously unidentified.  Of the victims, the youngest was 14 years old and the oldest 43.
