Frances Perkins was the first woman as the Secretary of Labor. Before this, she was involved in the New York Consumer's League. During a lecture at Cornell University, Perkins recalls being in New York at the time of the fire, and hearing the sound of bodies hitting the pavement.

Before long Perkins was on a citizen committee whose goal was the improvement of working conditions. When she was the Secretary of Labor years later, she influenced the nation in favor of the better working conditions.
